B.A. English
Course Outline
Master the English language with adequate proficiency in pronunciation, articulateness in speech, correctness of grammar and usage, elegance and style in diction in the choice of an appropriate variety of English for use in the various administrative and professional job opportunities available in the labour market, in literary and creative writing domains. An English degree can take you into a wide range of careers within the media, creative industries and beyond.
Through the analysing world-changing writing from medieval epic to the latest fiction and poetry an English degree encourages you to read in new ways; you will become a thoughtful, thorough and active reader who thinks intelligently about both what people have written (and are still writing) and about what it means to read and interpret their work. You will be introduced to a wide range of critical and theoretical approaches to literary and non-literary texts, and you’ll discover how history, philosophy, psychology and a range of other disciplines can inform our understanding of literary works. It also addresses advance areas such as sociolinguistics, how second language learners use English, the grammar semantics, and sound patterns of English, the psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics of language use, experimental linguistics, how the language is learned by children and the sociopolitics of language use in the media.
A degree programme in English Language will aim to:
- To acquire adequate communicative competence in both the spoken and written varieties of the English language
- To provide the knowledge of the forms and features of the varieties of English used in different professional domains such as business communication, legal communication, electronic broadcast media, print journalism, advertising and sports commentaries, book publishing, and biography writing
- To acquire adequate linguistic knowledge of the English Language through a detailed study of its Sound system, its lexicon, its syntax, semantics and usage.
- To focus on skills such as writing (e.g. of articles in magazines, of speeches; designing and presenting special programs on radio or TV, designing and publishing magazines etc.), creative writing, and other kinds of original output through independent thought, inventiveness and creativity.
- To instil in our students the valuable skills of critical thinking, scholarly rigour and good writing.
