Course Outline

 

History and International Diplomatic Studies provide the knowledge, language, and transferable skills necessary for entry to practical diplomacy, people to people negotiations, an advanced understanding of diplomacy as a political activity of central importance to the peaceful, stable and productive conduct between countries. It studies the historical development and relevance of intergovernmental organisations and institutions, for example the United Nations, the Commonwealth and the European Union, NATO, the G20 and the areas of the world with which professional diplomats are expected to be familiar with – such as the EU, EURASIA, BRICS, CIS, GCC, the Africa Union and, of course, Nigeria‘s role in these.

 

A degree programme in History and International Diplomatic Studies will aim to:

  • Appreciate the History and International Studies/History and Diplomacy
  • Evaluate the Diplomacy/International Studies/Diplomacy in the context of local societies and the international environment in which they exist.
  • Study international and regional institutions and the legal framework that have been introduced to strengthen the effectiveness of the diplomatic engagements among the members of the international community of states.
  • Ability to develop Good ethical behaviour, analytical skill and the capacity to consider and solve problems.

UTME:

Candidates who wish to study History and International /Diplomatic Studies must have obtained a credit pass SSCE in Mathematics and English Language plus credit pass in either Government or History and other two subjects at the SSCE, NECO, GCE or their equivalent not more than two sitting. Also required is on acceptable UTME score.

 

Direct Entry:

Candidates for Direct Entry admission shall possess five credit passes in the SSCE, NECO, GCE or equivalents of which at least two shall be at advanced level, or four units passes of which at least three shall be at advanced level provided that such passes are not counted at both levels of the examinations.  For emphasis credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and any of Government or History is compulsory.

Special Requirement

 

100 Level:     Candidates are required to take and obtain a proficiency certificate in a European Language other than English or in Japanese/Chinese. In addition, they must obtain a minimum of 2 elective units each in Sociology/Psychology, Management and Nigerian Legal System.

 

200 Level:     Candidates are required to take an advanced proficiency course in a European Language other than English or in Japanese/Chinese. In addition, they must obtain a minimum of 2 elective units each in Nigerian History, African History, Bargaining and Conflict Management and Administrative Law.

 

300 Level:     NOTE: HID 310, 311, 312, 313, 314, 315, 316, 317, and 318 may be cross- listed with appropriate equivalents in the Arts and Social Sciences disciplines/departments.

 

400 Level:     All Elective courses may be cross-listed with appropriate equivalents in the Arts and Social Sciences disciplines/departments.
